The Best Truck Driving Games

Truck driving games have been around almost as long as standard racer.  Rather they are big truck games or racing truck simulators, these programs tend to marry a simulation driving experience with the business aspects of trucking.  The programs tend to differ quite a bit between the consoles and the PC, and different gamers may have strong preferences towards one or the other. A smart consumer should try to find out as much as possible about both choices, as prices and availability tend to fluctuate wildly between platforms.

PC Games

The PC has generally been the more common home for trucking simulations, including both big truck gamesand racers.  The most popular is by far the 18 Wheels of Steels series, a simulation game that encompasses quite a few entries to date.  The programs set themselves apart from the market by marrying great graphical presentation with a fairly realistic trucking simulation, which makes for a great experience for those that like business simulations as well as driving sims.  Hard Truck is likewise quite popular, though many consider it to be the lesser retread of the Wheels of Steels series.  For those interested only in the business aspect, one should not forget releases such as Freight Tycoon and Hard Truck Tycoon – while they are light on the driving, they do replicate the business of running a trucking company quite well.

Consoles and Handheld Games

Video game consoles and handhelds rarely feature big rigs, outside of the deplorable Big Mutha Trucker series.  This series is more of an arcade racer, and considered to roundly be one of the worst games of all time.  However, there are a few great small truck racing games available, perhaps most notably Excite Truck on the Nintendo Wii.  Throwing out any pretense of simulation, the game is a serviceable racer that can provide some wonderful thrills for any gamer.  For those that want to truly experience a trucking experience on a game system, the PC is really the only option.  As a note, many of the titles listed under the PC section are also available on consoles, though the computer versions tend to be far better in terms of both content and playability.

There is always a number of truck driving gameson the market, from the classics on the PC to lesser console efforts.  It is always possible to find a good flash game featuring big rigs, and it just takes a bit of effort to dig through the mounds of free programs on the Internet to find one that is to your liking.  Regardless of the source, though, many of these games can be a great way to pass the time.  Always be sure to read up on reviews before making a purchase, as some releases simply may not be worth the time or cost to track down.
